In early 1800s there was a venture to create a train line from Sidmouth to Hook Ebb (A mile and half along the coast) to collect rocks for the sea defences. Once the track had been completed, including a section through the cliff, they found a flaw to the plan. The train did not fit! Therefore was used for pleasure rides along the Esplanade!
